Paired with his very human and humanizing lyrics, The Party is relatable and honest, simply marvellous. 20 – Fredericton, NB Shivering Songs (Solo) Shauf brings the same mentality to pop music as the songwriting greats of the 60s and 70s did, with gorgeous instrumentation, subtle arrangements and an all-round organic feel. “But the closer you pay attention to the record, the more you’re going to realize that it’s sinister.” It was released on January 24, 2020, under Anti. “The character of Norm is introduced in a really nice way,” Shauf says of the pleasant songs that precede the album’s centerpiece. The Neon Skyline is the sixth studio album by Canadian musician Andy Shauf. Wasted On You This feels like a sort of overture for the album. He even rewrote all of the album’s original lyrics, recreating the story, and enlisting Nicholas Olson as a story editor – it was only after writing the title track that Shauf decided to build a narrative around the character Norm. Shauf recruited Neal Pogue ( Tyler, the Creator, Janelle Monae, Outkast), a prodigious shaper of genre-and-time-defying tracks, to mix the album, further building on the gently levitating, synth-laden atmospherics.ĭuring this period, he was captivated by David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, which seemed to validate Shauf’s instinct to mix perspectives and tinker with shadowy narratives. Shauf’s goals were uncomplicated: create something melody-driven rather than chord-driven, and make it modern. On 2016s The Party, he created a compelling and powerful song cycle from the interactions of the guests at a party in a small Canadian town. The latter was essential to creating the more spacious and tactile sounds he sought. Andy Shauf is a songwriter who can find memorable stories in places most people would never bother to look. He sequestered himself in his garage studio, self-producing and playing every instrument on Norm, a collection of more conventional songs written predominantly on guitar, piano and synths. Shauf had planned to be touring around The Neon Skyline but, like many of us in the early days of the pandemic, he spent a lot of time alone instead. In other news, Shauf announces a 2023 Norm Tour including some of his biggest shows to-date. This is Norm ’s halcyon world we’re hearing, from the perspective of his inner voices, other people he interacts with, or even from the melodies that appear throughout the album like the brief fuzzy guitar line on “Daylight Daydreaming,” or the synthetic organs on “Don’t Let It Get To You.” It all sounds more refined than 2021s Wilds, sometimes on par with The Party, and just vague enough for the listener to make up their own interpretation.Andy Shauf announces his new album, Norm, will drop on Februvia Arts & Crafts, ahead of the release he has shared lead single/video, “Wasted On You”. Shauf wants us to find the answers ourselves. For example, why is an unnamed character smiling at Norm (the narrator) through the windows of the “Halloween Store”? Why is there a sinister string section that sounds like something from a horror movie at the end of the track? We wait for an answer but never get one. ©2023 ALLMUSIC, NETAKTION LLC - ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Sign Up For Our Weekly New Releases Newsletter. Not bad for a guy from small town Saskatchewan. A single, 'Things I Do,' was released the same day. His soothing voice even attracted the attention of Barack Obama, who once called the singer-songwriter one of his favourite artists. On 23 October 2019, Shauf announced that a new album, The Neon Skyline, would be released 24 January 2020. When Andy Shauf gained the attention of the public with his 2016 album, The Party, he was put on a pedestal, called a “gifted storyteller” who would reinvigorate the indie music scene with his blend of baroque pop and folk. Coming a year and a half after Shaufs last album, Wilds, and a full seven since his critically acclaimed narrative masterpiece The Party, the Saskatchewanian. ![]()
